Can we directly strive to cultivate Madhurya bhav?

Enlightened seers say that Dasya bhava is the universal bhava. It is present in everyone during the Sadhana stage. The jeeva from his side should consciously adopt dasya bhava during Sadhana. Sakhya, Vatsalya and Madhurya are bhavas that automatically emerge by the grace of Bhagavan. They are gifts from Bhagavan and automatically bloom in the heart without manual effort. Hence, they are not enforced, they happen.

So, how can spontaneous moods be imagined? Isn’t Hrishikesha the lord of the eternal abode? He is present in everybody’s heart. This material world is a reflection of the spiritual world. So it is Hrishikesha alone who shall reveal our eternal relationship within our hearts. This is the exchange of love from his side.

4 Rasas in different Lokas

In Vaikuntha

Based on Bhagavan’s form, we develop different moods. For instance, the Vamana avatar, in Satya Yuga, by his enormous stature enthralled the hearts of devotees. In such a massive-awe-inspiring form only Dasya bhava or the (mood of service) can be cultivated. You shall rarely find Sakhya, Madhurya and Vatsalya bhava. Even if present, they aren’t independent. Like Andal’s Madhurya for Bhagavan makes her one with Lakshmi devi.

In Saket Dham

Sri Rama is Maryada Purushottama. Sakhya, Madhurya and Vatsalya Bhava in Saket Dhama will but naturally be the way it was during his earthly stay in Ayodhya. Sri Rama was so shy that he even accepted monkeys and tribes as his friends. But a brother like Bharata always saw himself as his servant. There is immense room for Dasya and Vatsalya in Saket.

In Golok Dham

Even in Golok, all bhavas aren’t given equal space. Dasya is not fully mature there. In Golok, even servants have Vatsalya for Kanhai. Sakhya, Vatsalya and Madhurya Rasa dominate in Golok.

Are devotees allowed to interact in Bhagavan’s abode?

“In the eternal abode, no one is related to each other, each one is only related to Bhagavan.” These are the words of a famous scholar but are far from reality. If these words were true, then this world wouldn’t have been the eternal abode’s reflection.

Each resident freely interacts in the eternal abode, but only for Kanhai’s pleasure, to promote his pastimes and add to their sweetness.

Just like that one omniscient Lord Hrishikesha rests in the heart of each individual, each resident of Bhagavan’s abode experiences the ever-lingering presence of Bhagavan and sees him behave uniquely suiting their temperament.

As far as Golok is concerned, each household considers Baba Nanda, Maiya Yashoda, Ma Rohini, and Dau dada as an inseparable part of their family. Even these personalities interact with them with the feeling of mineness. Hence, if someone were to survey a household, the counting must first begin from them.

Kanhai’s matter slightly differs from these exalted people. As far as Kanhai is concerned, each one’s experience says that he is always around them. Kanhai cannot do without this- though Kanhai may behave differently with each member.

How many Families reside in Bhagavan’s abode?

How can the boundless one be understood by our limited intelligence. It is anyway impossible to count the number of universes. This material world is just the reflection of that eternal abode, then won’t that eternal abode be infinite? Even great mathematicians cannot estimate the number of families and households residing there.

Why do most devotees aspire for Sakhi Bhav?

In this context, as per the Puranas, just like in Vaikuntha, Purusha and Parshadas are the expansions, in Goloka, gopis are the expansions. This is because most strivers cultivate Sakhi bhava where Shri Krishna is their beloved.

There is another reason to it. Just like Kanhai has many consorts, his friends too have many wives. Only Nanda baba follows the vow of keeping one-wife there. There, even Daudada owns a huge chamber of wives. Revati Bhabhi is not his only wife. He has a well-diversified set of Sakhis and Sevikas.

Then why are we only describing one family of Golok? Only because it is not possible to describe the countless families. Also, in the Puranas especially in the Gaudiya Vaishnava scriptures, precedence has been given to Shri Radha, her principal friends and their Nikunja Leela pastimes.

All families belong to Krishna, so it is not possible to describe Krishna’s entire family. Already, his conjugal confidential pastimes have been well described, but all this revolves around Madhurya Bhava- which is perfect for the Sakhi bhava aspirants. I won’t get into the debate whether Sri radha rani’s conjugal pastimes be made public and expounded to the common man.

Is Madhurya bhava the highest rasa?

Madhurya bhava is certainly the highest, but Dasya, Sakhya and Vatsalya are no less. Golok is just not conjugal pastimes, there is much more to it. There is great joy in knowing how Dasya and the other bhavas function there.

I am describing a brother (call him a cousin brother) and the principal sakhas of Kanhai only because it is Kanhai who can see Dasya bhava as Vatsalya. There in Golok, even Sakhas can display Vatsalya towards him.

Naturally wherever I feel inclined, I can describe those areas more accurately. So this description is dedicated to Bhadrasena and his family.

Chakraji describes the family of Bhadrasena

Bhadra is the eldest son of Nanda Baba’s youngest brother Nandanji. It is hard to say how long he stayed in his mother’s lap. He has blossomed on Maiya Yashoda’s lap and he calls her Maiya. Of the same Nanda Graha he is the third- No, second son, because the third son is the ten months junior Kanhai. His own younger brother is Tok. But this one who calls his own father Nandanji ‘Chacha’ and his wife Atulaji ‘Chachi’ calls his own brother Tok- ‘Chacha ka Putra.”

How will this description benefit the reader? What is the gain? Everybody’s wellbeing lies in remembering Kanhai. You won’t deny that. Through this medium, we will keep remembering Kanhai. We will get an all-rounded view of this wonderful Nandalala. We will learn more about his nature. Through this introduction, love will arises, affection will develop. Moreover, if love has developed then it shall blossom.

If you have deep affection towards any form of the lord, then it shall brighten. All doubts shall vanish. If your understanding is clear and certain, then this description shall pull you towards your cherished deity. It would seem like your twin’s description.

Only for pure devotees

Clearly, this description is meant for believers of the form aspect. It is not for non-believers and vain logicians who refute the form aspect of Bhagavan. It is not for those intelligent men who are trapped in the whirlpool of Mayavada.

The impersonalists consider their ownselves to be Brahman. They sometimes get the dream of mother, father, teacher etc. How will this discussion of gopakumaras benefit those dreaming souls?

Finally, just want to say that all this description is merely suggestive. It resembles this material world only for us to understand. Otherwise, it is impossible to describe how the blissful lord sports in his abode. The dhama is beyond time and place, beyond perception, mind and intellect and is the embodiment of knowledge. Bhagavan’s eternal associates being non-different from him, appear different, yet are alive. How do things transact without involvement of senses, it is not possible to describe in words. Hence don’t take the description literally, think it to be a mere idea. Thus you will rightly grasp the context.
